And then, a verdict—sometimes glowing, sometimes dismissive—broadcast to thousands.

It’s tempting, this kind of instant storytelling. In a world hungry for quick takes and faster opinions, a first impression feels like enough. But when it comes to artisanal, niche perfumery, this approach doesn’t just fall short. It misses the point entirely.

You see, not all perfumes are meant to dazzle you in the first five minutes. Especially not those born outside the massive studios of global fragrance conglomerates. For small, independent houses, each perfume is not just a product—it’s a personal story, an emotional risk, a financial leap, and often years of devotion poured into a bottle.

This process is not automated. It’s not backed by massive teams or blank checks. It’s handcrafted, sometimes in a small studio, sometimes at a kitchen table. And when that creation—so carefully nurtured—is met with a 5-minute review and a thumbs-up or down, it can feel like watching someone judge a book by its cover… without even reading the title.

This is not to say that first impressions don’t matter. They do. But they are just that: first. Real fragrance—especially the kind that unfolds, evolves, and entangles itself with your story—can’t be fully known in an opening note. Like a person, it needs time to reveal itself.
